Authentic Mexican Food for the Holidays

In Mexico, women traditionally come together to cook massive amounts of food during holiday festivities. At Don Ramon, we bring in genuinely authentic Mexican food for you and your family this holiday season. Sometimes, the women of Mexico can typically spend days cooking and preparing meals for their families' holiday gatherings. However, some of the items on this list of holiday treats are only a short drive away. Here are some of the Mexican must-haves this holiday season.

Tamales

Right at the top of the list, we have a fan favorite in Mexico, tamales. Tamales, when made correctly, typically take a long time to make. However, it is like a celebration in itself once it is finished and steams, and you get to unwrap the corn husk just like you were opening a Christmas gift.

Rosca de Reyes or "Three Kings Bread"

This dessert is traditionally made in late December for Posadas or for Día de Los Santos Reyes on January 6th. The holiday treat resembles a nicely decorated wreath covered with candied figs, lemon, cherries, and mangos.

Mini Chicken Empanadas

While this dish can be made during any time of the year, many families make it during the holiday season to serve as an appetizer for the bigger meals up ahead. This is because the dish is one of the simpler dishes you can make, and how many people favor it.

Lime-Chipotle Carnitas Tostadas

Another year-round dish that is a good option for an appetizer is a carnitas tostada. Simply put, carnitas are like small soft tacos with pulled pork in them instead of beef. To top everything off, add some lettuce, onion, or guacamole to the top, and you might wish that it was the main course.

Pozole

Initially, this tradition began with the Aztecs. The tribe would make human sacrifices and eat the sacrificed flesh on special occasions. Thankfully, when the Spanish arrived, cannibalism was banned, and the flesh was replaced with the pork that we see in Pozole soup as we see it today. Our traditional pozole is made in chili-based broth and is typically served with lettuce, onions, lime, and tostadas.
